Literary Club

The Literary Club of Our Lady of Holy Cross College is a professional organization open to any student interested in creative writing, literature, editing, and publishing. While English majors usually become members, many other majors (Education, History, Biology) often become members.

Our major goal is the yearly publication of Calliope, the OLHCC literary magazine, which is a collection of poetry, short stories, reflections, and artwork by OLHCC students. Literary Club members contribute to the magazine and encourage other students to submit their work. They also sell ads to local businesses for publication in Calliope. The President of the Literary Club also serves as editor of Calliope.

The major activity of the Literary Club is to sponsor the Literary, Art, and Music Festival, which is usually held in April to launch the new issue of Calliope. Students, faculty, and staff participate by reading their own creative work or works by their favorite authors, by performing musical selections, and by exhibiting their original artwork.

The Literary Club’s new special service project, begun during the 2008-2009 school year, is support of OLHCC’s sponsorship of Scholastic Book Fairs at Murray Henderson Elementary School in Algiers. Funds raised through sale of ads in Calliope are used to promote love of reading and literacy among the youngsters at this New Orleans Recovery School District school. Literary Club members help to set up the fairs and read to the children during the Family Day activities. The Club welcomes all donations to OLHCC for the Scholastic Book Fairs, which are held twice per year—once in the fall and another in the spring—at a cost of $2500 per fair. Please contact Dr. Claudia Champagne for more information about making donations.

The Literary Club also sponsors readings by published authors and an annual party to celebrate the graduation of members.
