The University of Holy Cross (UHC) and WLAE-TV were awarded first place for Best TV Talk Show by the Press Club of New Orleans for the 30-minute weekly television show “Coping During the COVID Crisis.” In addition, Louisiana Governor Jon Bel Edwards issued an official statement giving special recognition to UHC and its Mental Health Counseling Department for its extensive outreach services during the pandemic and helping thousands across Southeast Louisiana cope with emotional turmoil brought on by the worldwide health emergency.

The TV show, which is broadcast every Friday on WLAE-TV Channel 32 at 8 p.m., debuted just three weeks after the pandemic hit the United States in March 2020 helps viewers cope with the endless emotional struggles, stress and stemming from COVID.

Hosted by UHC Mental Health Counseling Professor Dr. Roy Salgado and longtime New Orleans broadcaster Jan Gross, “Coping During the COVID Crisis” features professors and trained counselors from UHC’s mental health counseling department discussing a vast array of emotional issues resulting from the COVID crisis and offering tips on how best to carry on when the world was shut down for months due to the fast-spreading virus.

UHC opened its Mental Health Counseling phone line free of charge to then be called back by a trained UHC mental health counselor. Since then, UHC has taken more than 1,200 calls from citizens across the state in which counselors offer counseling and tips on coping during the epidemic.

“UHC is elated that the New Orleans Press Club selected our TV show as the top TV Talk Show in this market, and the show is a testament to our university’s mission of compassionate service to help those in need,” said UHC President Dr. Stanton McNeely III. “The Governor’s proclamation is also a recognition to the hard work and strong commitment by the university’s Mental Health Counseling Department.”

Coping During the Covid Crisis” is now in its second year of production and, with the area experiencing destruction from major Hurricane Ida this summer which contributed to additional stress and trauma among Southeast Louisiana residents, the show topics have expanded to include discussions and tips on how to cope during storm recovery while in the midst of a global pandemic.

The award-winning mental health show airs weekly on Fridays at 8 p.m. on WLAE-TV

(Channel 32, COX Ch. 714 and 1014, Charter Ch. 11 and 711 and AT&T DISH Ch. 32). The show also airs on statewide Public TV at 8 a.m. on Fridays on LPB 3. Anyone in need of counseling should call UHC Mental Health Counseling Office at 504-398-2168 to set up an appointment with a trained mental health counselor.
