Financial Aid Counselor

The University of Holy Cross is seeking a Financial Aid Counselor to support students throughout the financial aid process. The ideal candidate will guide students in understanding their financial options, assess individual financial needs, and recommend the most suitable aid opportunities. This role requires strong knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, as well as the ability to direct prospective students to the appropriate resources.

Key responsibilities include providing clear information and advice on eligibility requirements, student responsibilities, and program policies. The Financial Aid Counselor will assist students with completing applications, explain relevant procedures, and ensure accurate tracking of all financial aid documentation throughout the process.

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Assists and counsels prospective and current students to obtain the necessary resources to finance their education in accordance with federal, state, and college regulations.
  • Provides information to students and parents as to the various options of financial aid such as PELL Grants, FSEOG, TOPS, LA GO Grant, Work-study, and Scholarships.
  • Packages and processes student aid requests in an efficient, accurate and timely manner
  • Complete verification and special circumstance reviews.
  • Access and update electronic databases, including PowerFAIDS, the US Department of Education Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) system, the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) and ELM Resources.
  • Assist with reconciliation of Title IV program.
  • Assist with calculations of Return to Title IV
  • Assists students with the completion of financial aid applications and provides timely follow-up to resolve issues
  • Responsible for learning rules and regulations related to financial aid packaging and awarding and adhering to any regulatory policies.
  • Coordinates financial aid outreach programs and facilitates University specific financial aid presentations on and off campus.
  • Communicate with loan agencies and collection agencies and perform due diligence for delinquent loans.
  • Communicate with appropriate state and federal agencies to resolve any conflicting issues as needed
  • Maintains awareness of the University's strategic enrollment goals and collaborates as needed with others in the division.
  • Response to phone and email correspondence from prospective students, continuing students, and their families regarding cost and financial aid process.
  • Integrate efforts working in conjunction with all other appropriate offices of the institution.
  • Participate in orientation, registration, and graduation activities.
  • Serve on university committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • One (1) to Three (3) years experience working in a financial capacity within a higher education setting or related experience.
  • Broad skills in financial aid methodology, financial aid software, and federal regulations governing student financial aid programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of federal, local, and state programs that provide financial assistance to students.
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, rules, and regulations such as Federal Title IV regulations.
  • Various software programs and data systems as they relate to financial aid.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Demonstrate analytical, organizational, and supervisory skills.
  • Ensure timely and efficient delivery of student financial assistance to qualified applicants.
  • Interpret federal and state financial aid regulations and determine appropriate course of action.
  • Monitor and award federal and state financial aid programs.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and administration.
  • Perform consistently under the pressure of deadlines and other administrative demands.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
