Since 1916, the University of Holy Cross has been a leader in the highest tradition
of Catholic liberal arts education. As the classic canon of knowledge for centuries
since, the liberal arts have evolved to become a study of humanity that never loses
its relevance. As a Marianite university committed to teaching hearts as well as minds,
liberal arts is incorporated into every degree program. For students who want to specialize
in these studies, the Liberal Arts degree offers opportunities that serve as a firm
foundation for academics and for life.
Earn A Degree In Liberal Arts
Students may earn associate's or bachelor's degree specifically in Liberal Arts.
This broader program gives students latitude in creating an interdisciplinary curriculum
that fits their interests and allows them to combine areas of concentration. For example,
for the bachelor's degree, students choose two concentrations from the following disciplines:
Art, Biology, Business, English, Philosophy, History, and Theology.
Program Description
The curriculum of the Liberal Arts degree program is structured to offer a broad range
of courses designed to provide the student with a choice of concentrations in two
subject areas of interest. The program gives the student latitude in creating a curriculum
to meet his/her needs and interests. It affords the opportunity to combine areas of
concentration mutually enhancing to each other, thereby providing a more effective
and comprehensive education.
Program Purpose & Outcomes
The broad purpose of the program in Liberal Arts is to provide a firm foundation upon which to gain understanding and appreciation of mankind's accomplishments in the arts, sciences, and humanities. This purpose is described by the following outcomes:
The successful student will gain knowledge and appreciation of the artistic, political,
historical, social, economic, and broad cultural experiences of peoples from prehistoric
times to the modern era. The student is afforded the opportunity to pursue areas of
special interest in various disciplines across the combined curricula of the University,
humanities, business, psychology, sociology, natural and social sciences, and mathematics.
